Building a Contributor Ethic can prepare students for a changing world & create a success engine for institutes

The challenge faced by colleges in preparing students

Study after study indicates that there is a significant mismatch between what institutes teach and what is relevant in the workplace.

The answer, usually adopted by the institutes, is trying to widen the syllabus, add more subjects and technical skills and provide soft skills to students. This answer would be fine if the world outside the institute was stable and knew what it wanted. But the truth is that the employers themselves are facing new challenges and attempting to reinvent who they are – software companies is a case in point.

How to address the challenge of a moving target?

The answer does not lie in teaching more to students, but to go deeper and strengthen the students’ ability to thrive in a changing world. This means -

  1. enabling the student to learn how to learn, rather than learn more,
  2. enabling the student to learn to engage more deeply, rather than develop more specializations that could be irrelevant tomorrow,
  3. helping students learn to design new solutions rather than overdo the ‘technical knowledge’ bit, especially when the syllabus itself is in danger of becoming obsolete,
  4. enabling the student to develop the ability to take ownership and responsibility, rather than complain or run away from challenges.

In short, it means building in the student the Contributor Work Ethic that will enable the student to “culturally and attitudinally” flourish in a new world, rather than trying hard to anticipate what will happen in the next 30 years of the student’s technical career.

Intervention Model

For Large Universities

The Contributor Initiative for large universities is available in four versions –(i) for students, (ii) for faculty, (iii) for non-teaching staff, (iv) for showcasing to employers.

The faculty & non-teaching staff versions are fully customizable as per your university’s needs. Get in touch with us to configure a solution for your university.

The employer showcase version will be launched shortly. Write to us if you are interested in becoming a pilot university for this.

The student version is available as a formal course – with a complete syllabus, reference materials & an examination pattern which can be seamlessly integrated into the university system.

For Small Educational Institutes

The Contributor Initiative for small educational institutes is available as a high-engagement program for students. This is in the form of a formal, but modular intervention, which can be integrated into the college’s timetable as per the convenience of the faculty / students.

This intervention uniquely integrates classroom learning and field learning, thus enabling students to appreciate how the contributor ethic pans out in real-life scenarios.
