Building Contributor Leaders can create institutions that are focused on sustainable value creation

Theory 'C'

We find that 'Contributor Leaders' are key for sustainable success

In a world that is undergoing big shifts, it is becoming imperative that organizations are agile, innovative, and evolutionary, to be sustainably successful. We believe that an organization's capacity for such sustainable success is directly dependent on the number of contributor leaders who role model and nurture such a culture.

What differentiates Contributor Leaders from Regular Leaders?

Regular Leaders tend to focus on doing enough to meet the expectations set for their role. They end up driving short-term results - often using incentives & punishments to motivate their people. They tend to operate in a competitive, one upmanship frame in their thinking and solutioning.

Contributor Leaders, however, operate from a wider frame of consciously building the organization and its culture. They tend to widen their thinking beyond numerical targets to include dimensions such as quality of engagement, effectiveness, care, etc. They have the patience to invest into people & solutions with a long-term vision. They tend to be collaborative and thinking win-win for everyone involved. They tend to empower their people, mentor them and help them connect to the higher purpose in their work.

It is this expanded approach to their role that makes them key for sustainable growth and evolution of the organization.

Creating more Contributor Leaders: an imperative for future-facing organizations

Research shows that only 10 % of the leaders in an organization are Contributor Leaders.

In a fast changing world - with unprecedented technology disruption, commoditization, new market dynamics - there is an urgent need to systematically enable more leaders to become Contributor Leaders, so the organization can - not only respond meaningfully to the change, but also proactively engage with it.

Programmatic Model for Building Contributor Leaders

Illumine has designed the Contributor Leader Program to increase the number of contributor leaders in organizations.

Outcome: Unleashing a Dynamic of Contribution in Leaders

Illumine’s approach to building Contributor Leaders focuses on helping leaders transforming every interaction or activity into a moment of contribution.

As the leaders start consciously 'contributing' - to their team, peers, customers - a 'dynamic of contribution' gets triggered. Further, they are supported to start widening their zone of contribution and depth of contribution. After a tipping point in the journey, contribution comes naturally and becomes a way of life.

As a critical number of leaders start entering this dynamic of contribution, they will reinforce each other and it can create a multiplier effect in the organization - creating more collaboration, new orders of value creation, sustainable relationships with customers and a positive culture that brings back meaning & purpose to work.

Creating a dynamic of contribution: A Multi-modal approach

a Discovering a Break-through Vision

Leaders go through a systematic peer-led process of discovering a contributive vision of work and the possibilities it opens up - for them and for the organization.

This is done through a 2-day discovery workshop.

b Practice Enablement

The Leaders take it forward by practicing to contribute. Practice Enablers help them reflect on their interactions / work - to be able to consciously convert it into contributions and see its potential impact on oneself and others.

This is done through a unique Practice Enablement App.

c Expanding one's appreciation

Knowledge tools help open their mind to a wider understanding of what kind of contributions one can make. Further, they help them expand the scope & depth of their contributions.

These tools are provided digitally.

d Peer Support

A Peer Support environment helps sustain motivation and provides an opportunity to learn from others.

We facilitate digital WhatsApp / Facebook Community Engagements (with leaders) in which they can share success stories, ask for help when they are stuck and solve each other’s challenges.

e Coaching

Personalized Coaching helps by providing specific inputs to improve.

We do this through once a month face-to-face coaching sessions based on data from feedback reports, analytics from the app, analytics from learning tools and involvement in community engagements.

f Feedback Measures

Feedback measures from the team/ ecosystem help the leader gauge whether the changes in thinking/action is leading to a discernable impact on day-to-day work.

This feedback (collected from various stakeholders) can help leaders align their contributions to context & encourage them to do more (if required).
